What New Year?

Tonight, millions upon millions of brave souls will venture outside, in the frigid cold, to celebrate the end of 2017 and the birth of the “New Year 2018”. Countless of parties will load revelers with overpriced food and booze at several assorted venues. But are we truly celebrating a new year? How can it be January 1st?
Over the centuries, mankind has gone through many nonsensical motions. From resetting the entire world history back to year one, to mark the birth of western civilization, Daylight Saving Time, and the constant meddling with time.
For example, which day came after October 4th, 1582? On the night of October 4, 1582, as part of a massive fix of the Julian calendar, Pope Gregory XIII (r. 1572–1585) moved the clock from October 5th to October 15th, 1582.
Britain went to bed on September 2, 1752, and woke up on September 14. The reason? The Calendar (New Style) Act of 1750, of course.
So, tonight, millions upon millions of brave souls will venture outside, in the frigid cold, to celebrate the end of 2017 and the birth of the “New Year 2018”. Just another day.
