Ham it up

Just one day before the news of the contaminated beef was announced, the USDA announced a recall of more than 89,000 pounds of deli ham.
Johnston County Hams out of Smithfield, N.C. is recalling the meat because of a possible listeria contamination. The ham items affected were produced from April 3, 2017 to Oct. 2, 2018 and were distributed in Maryland, North Carolina, New York, South Carolina and Virginia.
“Listeriosis can cause fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions sometimes preceded by diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms,” according to the USDA.
One death and three illnesses have been reported in connection with the ham. The organization is urging customers to check their refrigerators and freezers and either throw away or return the items.
