The news is out: [An off-duty Langston University police officer has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon after he was caught on camera firing shots at an alleged shoplifting suspect outside a Del City Walmart, according to court documents.
According to the court documents filed Friday, officers responded on July 4 to a disturbance outside Walmart near Southeast 15th Street and Sooner Road. During the investigation, police said Jimmie Odell Watts Jr., a CLEET certified officer working as a security guard, stated that he tried to apprehend a man for shoplifting. That man resisted arrest and tried to leave, court documents stated.
According to authorities, as the suspected shoplifter drove in reverse in an attempt to leave the parking space, Watts stated the door of the vehicle struck him. He said he moved to keep his balance and avoid further contact with the open door of the car.
The driver was able to close the door, according to the court documents. He stopped and was beginning to move forward when Watts drew his service pistol and began firing at the driver’s side of the vehicle, authorities said.
According to the court documents, Watts continued to shoot at that vehicle as it drove away, striking the back of the vehicle several times.
Authorities said Watts was not in danger of great bodily injury or death when he fired rounds into the back of the vehicle. The driver was struck multiple times by Watts’ gunfire, according to the court documents. He was taken to an area hospital and is expected to be OK.]
That’s what they do.
